President Donald Trump says federal authorities are investigating what he described as vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after visible damage appeared just days after the landmark reopened following a multimillion dollar renovation.
The president made the claim in a late night post on Truth Social on Friday, alleging that unknown individuals intentionally damaged the pool’s interior surface. Trump did not provide evidence for the allegation but said the problem was limited to a small section and would be repaired soon.
His comments came a day after visitors and photographers noticed blue material peeling away from the bottom of the Reflecting Pool, which had recently been drained, painted and refilled as part of a major restoration project ordered by the White House.
Trump says vandalism caused damage to the pool
In his social media post, Trump said the Reflecting Pool had experienced significant problems due to vandalism but insisted repairs were progressing.
The president said most of the algae that had recently affected the pool had been removed and that the remaining damage would be fixed early next week. He also claimed that chemicals similar to those allegedly used in an earlier act of vandalism on the National Mall had been introduced into the pool in an effort to damage the new surface.
Trump did not share details about the alleged chemicals or identify any suspects. Federal officials had not publicly confirmed the vandalism claims as of Friday night.
The Interior Department and the National Park Service have not released additional information about the cause of the damage.
Trump links the incident to 8647 markings
Trump tied the Reflecting Pool issue to another recent controversy involving the numbers 8647, which appeared etched into the grass near the National Mall earlier this month.
The markings drew attention because the number 86 is sometimes used in slang to mean getting rid of something or someone, while Trump is serving as the 47th president of the United States. The phrase has increasingly appeared in political protests and online criticism directed at Trump.
Federal officials previously condemned the markings as vandalism and quickly began efforts to restore the damaged area.
Recent photographs show the numbers remain visible, with some of the digits appearing more distinct than when they were first discovered.
Officials have not said whether they believe the incidents are connected.
Renovation costs climbed far beyond early estimates
The controversy comes as Trump’s renovation of the iconic pool has already faced scrutiny over its rising costs.
The project was initially projected to cost about $1.8 million. However, government contract records show the final award to Atlantic Industrial Coatings totaled approximately $14.7 million.
The work included draining the Reflecting Pool, applying a blue coating to the basin and refilling the water feature in time for the summer tourist season.
The restoration is part of Trump’s broader beautification initiative in Washington, D.C., which has become one of the signature domestic projects of his second term.
The president has repeatedly argued that national monuments and public spaces in the capital deserve greater investment and maintenance. He also criticized Democrats in his Friday post, saying previous administrations failed to adequately care for the Reflecting Pool.
Questions remain about what caused the damage
While Trump has characterized the damage as deliberate vandalism, questions remain about exactly what caused the peeling material and whether outside interference played a role.
Experts note that coatings used in large water features can sometimes fail because of installation problems, weather conditions or issues related to curing and adhesion. Federal officials have not publicly released any findings about the pool’s condition or whether an investigation has identified evidence of criminal activity.
For now, crews continue working on repairs as visitors gather around one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks.
Whether the damage was caused by vandalism, a construction issue or another factor altogether remains unclear. But with the Reflecting Pool serving as a centerpiece of Trump‘s ambitious renovation agenda, the episode is likely to draw continued scrutiny in the days ahead.
