DJ Chark, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver who spent seven seasons in the NFL, has announced his retirement at the age of 29. The Alexandria, Louisiana native made the announcement Friday on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt message that looked back on a career shaped by love of the game, deep faith and the unwavering support of his family.
Chark reflected on a journey that began when he first laced up his cleats at the age of 7, with no way of knowing how far the sport would take him. He expressed gratitude for every teammate, fan and organization that played a role along the way, and made clear that his next chapter centered on community involvement and charitable work is one he is approaching with genuine excitement and optimism.
From LSU to the NFL draft
Chark’s path to professional football ran through Louisiana State University, where he developed into one of the more intriguing receiving prospects in his draft class. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, betting on his combination of size, speed and big-play ability to make an impact at the next level.
That bet paid off in a big way. In his second season with Jacksonville, Chark broke out decisively, posting career-best numbers of 73 receptions, 1,008 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. The performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection and announced him as one of the more exciting young pass catchers in the game. It was the kind of season that made the league take notice and suggested a long, productive career was ahead of him.
A career defined by flashes and frustration
Over his first four seasons with the Jaguars, Chark compiled 147 receptions for 2,042 yards and 15 touchdowns across 43 games. Those numbers reflected both his genuine talent and the injury disruptions that became an unfortunate recurring theme throughout his career. He missed at least six games in three of his final four NFL seasons, a pattern that repeatedly interrupted his rhythm and prevented him from sustaining the momentum of that brilliant 2019 breakout.
The 2022 season brought a fresh start with the Detroit Lions, who signed him to a one-year, $10 million contract. He appeared in 11 games and delivered 30 receptions for 502 yards and three touchdowns a respectable output for a receiver working within a new system and battling through another year of limited availability.
The following offseason, Chark headed to the Carolina Panthers, where he found a more prominent role. He started 11 of his 15 appearances for Carolina, finishing with 35 catches for 525 yards and five touchdowns. It was one of the more consistent stretches of his later career, even if it came without the individual recognition of his Jacksonville peak.
His final NFL regular-season action came in 2024 with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he managed just four receptions for 31 yards and one touchdown in a limited role. He signed with the Atlanta Falcons ahead of training camp last year in hopes of extending his career but did not survive final cuts in August, bringing his time as an active player to a quiet and unceremonious end before Friday’s formal announcement made it official.
What comes next
In his Instagram post, Chark was reflective and gracious, crediting his parents for their early support, his wife and children for standing beside him through the highs and lows, and his faith as the foundation that carried him through it all. He described the possibilities of his next chapter as endless and said that sense of possibility genuinely excites him.
He also made clear that giving back will be central to that next chapter. Chark spoke about remaining active in his community and continuing charitable work as priorities going forward, suggesting a man eager to apply the same discipline and commitment that defined his playing days to something larger than the game itself.
For a player who navigated injuries, roster changes and the relentless demands of a seven-year NFL career across four franchises the Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers the tone of his farewell felt entirely earned. Grateful, grounded and ready for whatever comes next.
