Nintendo Switch 2 owners hoping to play the upcoming James Bond game alongside everyone else will have to hold off a little longer. IO Interactive, the developer and publisher behind 007 First Light, confirmed on X that the Switch 2 version of the game will not be ready for the May 27 launch date it has set for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Windows PC. Instead, Switch 2 players can expect the game to arrive later in the summer.
The announcement came after rumors circulated Wednesday morning that the Switch 2 port could be facing an indefinite delay. IO Interactive did not put a hard date on the platform’s release, describing it only as a summer window.
Already delayed once before
The May 27 date itself represents a setback. 007 First Light was originally scheduled to launch on March 27, 2026, before IO Interactive pushed it back across all platforms in December 2025. At the time, the studio’s CEO Hakan Abrak said the delay was necessary to deliver the level of quality players deserve from the start. That decision extended the development runway and shifted the release into late spring.
The road to launch has included a few other stumbles as well. Earlier this year, IO Interactive published PC system requirements that drew immediate scrutiny from players who flagged inconsistencies between the listed specs. The studio pulled back the post within days, issuing revised requirements and acknowledging the original version had gone out due to an internal miscommunication involving an older document.
Sony, meanwhile, has announced a limited-edition 007 First Light DualSense controller, signaling that the PlayStation side of the launch is moving forward as planned.
A pattern emerging on Switch 2
The Switch 2 delay for 007 First Light is not an isolated situation. Several notable third-party releases have encountered similar friction on the platform. Gearbox Entertainment delayed and eventually abandoned its Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 altogether after the game had already launched on other consoles. Elden Ring, which was announced as a Switch 2 title, ran into serious performance problems during a public demo at Gamescom in 2025, pushing its release into an unconfirmed window this year. A preview shown at GDC earlier in 2026 suggested development has improved, but no firm date has been given.
Not every third-party publisher has had the same experience. Capcom managed to launch Resident Evil Requiem and Cronos: The New Dawn on Switch 2 on the same day as their counterparts on other platforms, and the upcoming Pragmata is also on track for a simultaneous release. Whether that reflects Capcom’s particular expertise with the hardware or simply different technical demands from each title remains an open question.
What players can expect when it arrives
When 007 First Light does land on Switch 2, players will step into the origin story of James Bond before he earned his 007 status. The game features new interpretations of familiar characters including M and Q, alongside an original villain portrayed by musician Lenny Kravitz. IO Interactive built its reputation on the Hitman series, and this marks the studio’s first major departure from that franchise.
For Switch 2 players, the wait is frustrating but familiar at this point in the console’s early life. IO Interactive has not given any further detail on what is causing the gap between platforms, and it is unclear whether technical challenges or scheduling decisions are the primary factor.
