The actor is set to star in Supermax, an action thriller about an FBI investigation inside the world’s most secure prison, heading straight to streaming on Amazon. After more than two years away from film sets, Will Smith is making his return to movies and he is doing it inside the most secure prison in the world.
Smith is set to star in Supermax, an upcoming action thriller that follows two FBI agents as they investigate a murder committed within a supermaximum security federal facility. Smith will portray one of the lead agents, though the female co-lead has not yet been cast. The project was reported by Deadline and has quickly drawn attention as one of the more intriguing Hollywood announcements of the year.
Amazon MGM Studios has acquired worldwide distribution rights to the film, with plans to release it directly to streaming rather than through a traditional theatrical run.
A high profile team behind the camera
The creative team assembled for Supermax lends the project considerable weight. David Gordon Green, best known for directing The Exorcist, Believer and the rebooted Halloween trilogy, is set to helm the film. Green brings a proven track record with large scale genre projects and is expected to bring a tense, atmospheric quality to the prison setting.
The screenplay comes from two writers who share both a first name and a history of collaboration. David Rosen and David Weil previously worked together on the television series Hunters and Invasion, with Rosen serving as creator on the latter. Weil also has the upcoming Apple TV series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed in his pipeline, making this a busy period for both writers.
Production is expected to get underway this summer, though a specific release window has not yet been announced.
Smith’s first standalone film since 2022
For longtime fans of Smith’s film career, Supermax marks a genuinely significant moment. The West Philadelphia native has not appeared in a movie since the 2024 action sequel Bad Boys, Ride or Die, which was part of the franchise he has anchored for three decades. Before that, his presence in film had been largely tied to established properties.
His last standalone feature one not connected to an existing franchise was Emancipation, the 2022 Civil War era drama that arrived amid significant public scrutiny following the incident at that year’s Academy Awards ceremony. The film received mixed reviews but earned Smith praise for the intensity of his performance.
In the time since, Smith has remained visible through television, most notably through his National Geographic docuseries Pole to Pole, in which he traveled from the South Pole to the North Pole. The show gave audiences a more personal and unscripted side of the star, and by many accounts helped ease his reentry into public life after a turbulent period.
Why this role feels like a turning point
There is something deliberate about the choice of Supermax as Smith’s film comeback. It is a genre project action driven, commercially minded but one that places him in a leading dramatic role that requires range rather than relying on charisma alone. Playing a federal investigator navigating the politics and dangers of a supermax facility is a far cry from the blockbuster spectacle of Bad Boys, and that distance may be exactly the point.
The Amazon streaming platform also offers a degree of insulation from the box office pressure that would accompany a wide theatrical release, allowing Smith’s performance to be evaluated on its own terms rather than through the lens of opening weekend numbers.
With a respected director, a strong writing team, and one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood attached, Supermax arrives with momentum and with the sense that Smith is ready to remind audiences exactly why he became a star in the first place.
