The Air Jordan 6 ‘Carmine’ is one of those releases that does not need much of an introduction in sneaker circles. It was part of the original 1991 lineup when Michael Jordan wore the silhouette during his first NBA championship run, and decades later the colorway still commands the kind of attention that few retros can match.
According to trusted sneaker industry sources, Jordan Brand is planning a mid-2027 return for the ‘Carmine’ through the SNKRS app and select third-party retailers. No official confirmation from Jordan Brand has been issued yet, but the leak adds the ‘Carmine’ to a growing list of 2027 retros that already includes the ‘White Cement’, ‘Obsidian’ and ‘Raptors’ colorways.
Pricing has not been confirmed, though industry observers expect the sneaker to carry a $215 retail price barring any further increases from Jordan Brand in the intervening period.
What the shoe actually looks like
The ‘Carmine’ stands apart from the other two colorways Jordan wore during that 1991 championship season, the Black Infrared and White Infrared, thanks to its red suede base paired with white leather overlays. Black appears on the tongue, liner, heel spoiler and portions of the midsole, while carmine red returns on the heel branding and spoiler stripe.
The midsole features a tri-color construction combining white with translucent blue sections, a detail that was introduced in 2014 to help slow yellowing over time.
No photos of the 2027 edition have surfaced yet, but based on Jordan Brand’s recent pattern with retros, it is widely expected that the Nike Air heel branding will return once again, as it has on recent releases including the Air Jordan 6 White Infrared and the Salesman drop.
A retro history worth knowing
The ‘Carmine’ 6 has gone through several chapters since its 1991 debut. Its first retro came in 2008 as part of the Countdown Pack series, paired with the Air Jordan 17 in a collector-oriented release. In 2014 the shoe returned as a standalone retro, though that version replaced the original Nike Air heel branding with the Jumpman logo, which drew criticism from fans who wanted a more faithful recreation.
The 2021 release addressed that concern directly. For the first time since the original 1991 release, the Nike Air branding was restored on the heel, making it the most authentic retro the colorway had seen in 30 years. That context matters because the Air Jordan 6 holds a specific place in the brand’s history as the last model in the original Air Jordan series to feature Nike Air branding, until the Air Jordan 40 brought it back more recently.
Why this release carries weight
The Air Jordan 6 ‘Carmine’ is tied to a singular moment in basketball history. It was the shoe on Michael Jordan’s feet during a title run that changed how people thought about both the sport and the culture surrounding it. For collectors who prioritize original colorways with documented on-court significance, the ‘Carmine’ sits near the top of that conversation.
With a six-year gap since the last release and Nike Air branding expected to appear once again, the 2027 drop is shaping up to be one of the more anticipated retros on next year’s calendar. Family sizing is also expected to be offered, broadening the release beyond the collector market.
