Atlanta Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels is alert and able to move all his limbs after suffering a neck injury against the Chicago Bears today, Oct. 18, the team said. He was carted off in the third quarter after his head appeared to hit Bears tight end Colston Loveland’s left leg near the knee as he dove in to make a tackle. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for further evaluation. The Bears went on to win 31 to 23.
That is the answer most fans were searching for. But the play itself, the long silence on the field and the hole it left in Atlanta’s defense tell a bigger story.
What happened to Kendal Daniels?
The injury happened with Chicago leading 21 to 7 and 8 minutes, 48 seconds left in the third quarter. Daniels went in low on Loveland after a Caleb Williams completion. NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk reported that his facemask collided with Loveland’s knee. He stayed down, and medical staff rushed out.
Then everything stopped. Trainers cut his jersey off, immobilized his neck and strapped him to a board. Players from both teams knelt and prayed while he was loaded onto the cart. As he was driven off the field, Daniels made a fist with his left hand. For a stadium full of people who feared the worst, that small gesture meant a lot.
Is Kendal Daniels going to be OK?
The early signs are good, but the full picture is not clear yet. The Falcons posted on X during the fourth quarter that Daniels was alert and moving all his extremities and had been taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The FOX broadcast also reported that he was fully conscious.
Being alert and able to move every limb are among the earliest signs that a neck injury may not be catastrophic. The team has not released a diagnosis or a timeline.
He is in good hands. Grady is Atlanta’s public hospital and a Level I trauma center. In Black Atlanta, the name carries real weight. Generations of families have trusted Grady through their worst emergencies, and many proud locals call themselves Grady babies because they were born there. Today, the city’s hospital took in one of its newest football players.
Who is Kendal Daniels?
Daniels, 23, grew up in Beggs, Oklahoma. He started his college career at Oklahoma State as a safety before transferring to Oklahoma in 2025. Atlanta took him in the fourth round of this year’s draft, and he has started every game this season. He entered Sunday with 23 tackles and a sack. He had made seven tackles against Chicago before the injury.
Why does this injury hurt the Falcons so much?
This is the part few people are talking about. Daniels was wearing the green dot helmet, the one with the radio that receives the defensive play calls. He only had it because starter Divine Deablo had already left with an arm injury. Pro Football Talk noted that Atlanta lost both of its defensive play callers in a single afternoon.
Josh Woods took over the green dot after Daniels went down. Rookie Harold Perkins Jr. also had to take on a bigger role. With two linebackers hurt, Atlanta will face major questions about who runs its defense next week.
What comes next?
The next update will come from Grady, not from the field. Doctors will decide how serious the neck injury is, and the Falcons will decide when to share it. Until then, the clearest sign of how Daniels is doing is the one he gave himself, a closed fist raised from a cart.
