Brandon Aiyuk will not play when the San Francisco 49ers host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football on Oct. 19. The 28 year old receiver remains on the 49ers’ reserve/left squad list, unpaid and barred from team activities until he asks to be reinstated. He has said publicly he never will.
That makes Monday strange. Aiyuk circled this exact date months ago as the only night he would ever walk back into Levi’s Stadium, and he pictured himself in burgundy and gold. Instead, the night opens a countdown that could decide whether he ever plays again.
Why isn’t Brandon Aiyuk playing for the 49ers?
Aiyuk signed a four year, $120 million extension in 2024 after a breakout 2023 season that helped push San Francisco to the Super Bowl. In October 2024 he tore his ACL and MCL and damaged his meniscus against Kansas City.
In July 2025, the 49ers voided $27 million in guaranteed salary, saying he failed to give required rehab updates. Aiyuk disputes that and says the team’s own data showed his progress. After The Athletic reported on the split last November, he cut off contact with the team, his teammates and his agent. He hasn’t been back since.
Why does Brandon Aiyuk want to play for the Commanders?
One name explains it. Jayden Daniels. The two were inseparable at Arizona State in 2019, when Aiyuk posted his best college season with Daniels throwing to him.
Since then Aiyuk has posted in Commanders gear, FaceTimed Daniels on camera and told fans on Instagram he would sign with Washington the day after a release. He also said he bought a $10 million home in Loudoun County, Va. Daniels and the Commanders are among only five accounts he follows on Instagram.
Washington hasn’t returned the energy. The team would only consider a short, incentive-heavy deal, according to The Athletic, and it signed veteran Stefon Diggs this summer. Even the friendship hit turbulence in July, when Aiyuk blasted Daniels on Instagram over a viral clip. The two later smoothed it over privately.
Who is warning Brandon Aiyuk?
Not just the 49ers. The loudest alarms are coming from former players. Ryan Clark said on The Pivot Podcast that Aiyuk was damaging his future one video at a time. Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner said on his podcast that Aiyuk had sealed his own fate and called it the end of his career.
Old teammates and coaches told The Athletic they are worried about him. They remember a kid so obsessed with football that he once carried his cleats to math class instead of his books.
There’s legal trouble, too. A misdemeanor warrant tied to a video of him speeding near Levi’s Stadium remains outstanding, according to The Athletic. He has apologized for the incident.
Can Brandon Aiyuk still play in 2026?
Here’s where the calendar takes over. Tuesday, Oct. 20, marks two years since the knee injury. The trade deadline is Nov. 10. If Aiyuk files for reinstatement after that date, San Francisco can deny it. After Week 13, he can’t file at all until the offseason.
If he never files, his contract keeps tolling. That contract runs through 2028, and the 49ers would hold his rights indefinitely. That’s the part fans rarely sit with. Aiyuk has framed this standoff as a fight for control of his own career, sometimes in language that drew heavy criticism. Yet the rules hand him the only key to the door, and he has to turn it himself.
So the whole saga comes down to a letter. Not a trade. Not a viral post. A single request Aiyuk swears he will never send. On Monday night, the receiver who once vowed to show up at Levi’s on this exact date will likely be watching like everybody else. Whether he’s still watching after Week 13 depends on a letter only he can write.
