A luxury minivan priced like a small house is supposed to stop on command. A set of test videos from China has raised hard questions about one critical part on one of the country’s most expensive new models.
The brake pedal brackets on three new Maextro V800 vehicles broke during emergency braking tests, according to footage published Oct. 8, 2026, by a major Chinese car review platform. The brand behind the vehicle has since promised existing owners a free upgrade.
What happened in the Maextro V800 brake tests?
Testers ran repeated emergency stops from 100 kilometers per hour, or about 62 mph, at a closed facility between Oct. 1 and Oct. 3. The bracket that holds the brake pedal fractured on every vehicle, failing on the third, fourth and second full force stop, respectively.
Once the brackets broke, the pedals detached and the foot brake stopped working. Testers had to rely on emergency measures, including shifting into Park, to bring the vans to a halt. The owner’s manual notes that this Park function is meant for slowing down and cannot fully replace normal braking. Reports on the footage said stopping distances stretched far beyond the roughly 38 meters the vans needed in normal stops.
The three vehicles reportedly came from different production batches, yet each failed at the same spot in a similar way. The platform, which is owned by TikTok parent ByteDance, said it had never seen a brake pedal bracket break during such testing before.
How did Maextro respond?
The company answered the same day. It said the Maextro V800 braking system was developed and tested to standards stricter than both national and industry requirements in China.
Maextro also said no bracket had failed during normal customer driving since deliveries began, and it described the conditions in the video as nonstandard and extreme. The testing platform disputed that description.
Even so, the brand pledged to refine the part’s design and give current owners a free upgrade. It also said it would review its design verification, testing procedures and production quality management. The statement offered no timeline for the fix and did not mention a recall.
What is the Maextro V800?
The Maextro V800 is a luxury new energy minivan that launched in August. Prices start at 766,000 yuan and climb to 1.016 million yuan, or roughly $114,000 to $151,000.
It is the first minivan from Maextro, a premium brand developed by tech giant Huawei and Chinese automaker JAC Motors. The brand sits at the top of the lineup sold through Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance.
That alliance said it had not received customer complaints about the brake pedal and that deliveries were proceeding normally.
Why did the Maextro V800 brackets fail?
No official cause has been released. Early analysis from auto media covering China pointed to the pedal’s geometry, noting a relatively long distance between the pivot point and the spot where the driver’s foot presses down.
A longer lever puts more stress on the bracket during hard braking. Whether that design choice explains the failures remains unconfirmed.
What does this mean for Maextro V800 buyers?
For now, owners are waiting on details of the promised upgrade. The company points to a clean record in everyday use, but the videos have spread widely and drawn scrutiny to one of China’s priciest new models.
Investors reacted quickly. Shares of JAC Motors fell sharply after the footage circulated, hitting the daily trading limit.
The episode also adds pressure on Chinese automakers competing at the luxury end of the market, where expectations for quality run especially high. How quickly Maextro rolls out the fix may shape how much damage the Maextro V800 name suffers.
