Coal resources located on federally managed public lands across the country could meet national demand for at least six centuries at current consumption rates, according to a recent assessment released by a federal agency this week.
That estimate draws on findings from a geological survey focused specifically on resources found within federal land holdings. According to the report, the continental United States holds more than 355 billion short tons of available on federal land, with each short ton equal to 2,000 pounds.
Alaska holds a massive share of coal resources
Alaska alone accounts for an estimated 140 billion short tons of known resources, though that figure could climb dramatically when accounting for undiscovered deposits and other contributing factors, with some estimates suggesting the state’s total potential reserves could reach as high as 5.5 trillion short tons. That scale places Alaska among the most significant coal holding regions within the federal land system by a wide margin.
Where coal mining currently takes place
As of last year, federal lands hosted 34 active mines, which together produced more than 261 million short tons of coal. Wyoming led all states by a considerable margin, home to 14 of those 34 sites and responsible for the largest share of coal production from federal land overall.
Colorado followed with six operating mines, while North Dakota and Utah each hosted four sites. Alabama and Montana rounded out the list with three mines apiece, illustrating how production on federal land remains concentrated primarily across a handful of western and midwestern states.
What the coal produced is actually used for
Among the 34 active sites, the overwhelming majority, 29 mines in total, produced thermal used specifically for electric power generation. Three additional mines produced metallurgical coal used in steelmaking, while a single site produced intended for use in cement manufacturing. One mine remained idle at the time of the assessment, neither active nor contributing to overall production totals.
What this means for future coal supply
Taken together, these findings paint a picture of substantial long term availability on public land, particularly when factoring in Alaska’s outsized potential reserves. Whether this supply translates into expanded mining activity going forward will likely depend on a range of factors beyond resource availability alone, including energy policy priorities, market demand for relative to other energy sources, and environmental considerations tied to future land use decisions on federal property.
For now, the assessment offers a clearer picture of just how extensive the country’s resources remain, even as broader conversations continue around the role coal will play in the nation’s overall energy mix in the years ahead.
