Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to one of the largest box office weekends in cinema history, collecting $355 million in the United States and Canada during its debut, the second-largest North American opening ever recorded and the biggest launch yet for any Spider-Man film.
Worldwide, the Marvel and Sony production grossed $572 million internationally across 73,500 screens, bringing the global opening weekend total to $927 million, the second-largest global debut in box office history. The film surpassed every previous Spider-Man opening, including the $260 million domestic launch of the prior franchise record-holder in 2021.
The only film to have outperformed it in both the domestic and global columns is Avengers: Endgame, which collected $357 million in North America during its opening weekend in 2019 and crossed $1.2 billion globally during that same period.
How the weekend broke down globally
China was the single largest overseas market for the film, generating $121 million during opening weekend. Europe, Latin America and Asia all contributed to the international total, with attendance described as strong across regions.
Industry analysts had forecast an opening near $325 million domestically, making the final $355 million figure a meaningful beat above projections. Films in the franchise and broader Marvel universe have historically performed at or above analyst estimates during opening weekends, but exceeding the forecast by approximately $30 million on the domestic side is notable even within that context.
The international side of the business, while more difficult to predict given varying release schedules and market conditions, also came in above early projections, with the $572 million overseas total contributing to a global first weekend that neither studio had announced as a target in advance.
What this means for the franchise and the studios
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the latest chapter in a franchise collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, two companies with a complex and historically negotiated arrangement over the rights to use the Spider-Man character in film. The enormous opening underscores how valuable that arrangement has become for both parties, and how durable the brand has proven to be with global audiences.
The film’s title references a well-known storyline from the Marvel comics. What is clear from the numbers is that audiences turned out in massive numbers at full-price and premium-format screenings, which are typically where the largest opening weekend figures come from given higher ticket prices.
Placing it in box office history
The list of the largest North American opening weekends is short and concentrated among a handful of franchises. Endgame sits atop the list, followed now by Brand New Day in second place. The gap between the two is approximately $2 million, making the new film the closest any release has come to matching the Endgame record.
The new Spider-Man film improved on No Way Home‘s 2021 domestic record by nearly $100 million, a substantial increase that reflects both the drawing power of the new film and the continued strength of moviegoing as a form of entertainment.
The global figure of $927 million places Brand New Day in a narrow tier of films that have ever approached the billion-dollar mark in a single opening weekend. Only Endgame has crossed that threshold, and the new Spider-Man film came within 75 million dollars of doing so.
Whether the film sustains its momentum in subsequent weekends will determine its final box office total, but the opening alone has secured its place among the most commercially successful films ever released.
