Two years after sweeping into power, Republicans watched voters hand Congress back to Democrats. The results gave the party its strongest night in years and a powerful check on the White House.
A blue wave swept the country in the Nov. 3, 2026, midterm elections, as Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate and flipped at least four governor’s offices, according to projections.
How big was the blue wave?
The Associated Press projected early Wednesday that Democrats had cleared the 218 seats needed to control the House. Democrats gained more than two dozen House seats, according to early counts.
In the Senate, Democrats picked up at least six seats, flipping Republican seats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio, according to projections. They also held seats in Georgia and New Hampshire.
Wins in South Carolina, Texas and Kansas stood out as signs of the blue wave because those states were considered safely Republican at the start of the campaign.
Results in some races were still being counted Wednesday, and final margins could shift. Several House races remain too close to call.
Which Senate races defined the night?
In Georgia, Sen. Jon Ossoff won reelection over Republican Rep. Mike Collins, leading by nearly 18 points as votes were counted. In North Carolina, former Gov. Roy Cooper defeated former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley by nearly 20 points.
President Donald Trump carried both states by more than two points in 2024, underscoring the reach of the blue wave.
A University of Arizona political scientist said affordability, which helped Republicans win in 2024, remained a top concern and that voters were signaling that the policies of the past two years were not working for them. Republicans have argued their economic policies need more time to take effect.
What happened in the House?
Democrats flipped seats across the map, including in North Carolina, where farmer and business owner Jamie Ager won an open seat, and in New Jersey, where Rebecca Bennett was projected to unseat Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr.
The party also won three seats in Pennsylvania and seats in Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and New York, according to projections.
In Florida, Democrats held three districts that Republicans had redrawn to favor their party, with wins by Reps. Jared Moskowitz and Kathy Castor and newcomer Pia Dandiya. Dandiya’s win in a redrawn district was one of the night’s notable upsets.
What does the blue wave mean for Trump?
Trump congratulated Democrats on their win in an interview with Fox News, saying they worked hard. He said he would work with them on some issues but not on others, including the border and transgender issues.
With control of committees, Democrats will gain subpoena power and have vowed to investigate the Trump administration, though the party is divided over another impeachment. The blue wave also sets up likely fights with the White House over spending. A similar standoff followed Democrats’ House victory in 2018, during Trump’s first term.
What comes next after the blue wave?
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, expected to become speaker, called the result the beginning of a great American comeback. He said voters had had enough of corruption and wanted a Congress that delivers.
If elected speaker in January, Jeffries would become the first Black speaker of the House in American history. Black voters and leaders have long pointed to Jeffries’ rise as a historic milestone.
He will lead a caucus divided between progressives and moderates, making the size of the majority important. How Democrats use the blue wave will shape the final two years of Trump’s term.
