The first images show a fresh, small crater carved into the lunar surface where a discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage struck the moon on Aug. 5, 2026. South Korea’s Danuri lunar orbiter, operated by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, captured the site both before and after impact, confirming a crater that astronomers estimate at roughly 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep.
The images mark the clearest look yet at a collision that space watchers had been anticipating for months. Danuri began observing the area about 30 minutes before impact and continued monitoring afterward, completing eight imaging sessions that revealed changes in the surrounding terrain and scattered debris thrown outward by the strike.

Why did the rocket stage crash into the moon
The stage ran out of fuel after completing its mission and drifted for months in what SpaceX described as a kind of orbital limbo. Over time, solar activity and the combined gravitational pull of Earth, the moon and the sun gradually shifted its path until it was drawn into the moon.
SpaceX said it typically plans for a controlled deorbit of SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stages so they burn up or land safely in the ocean, but higher energy missions bound for lunar transfer orbits leave little fuel margin for that kind of maneuver. The company said it is working with NASA to find better disposal solutions for future missions of this type, and noted that its next generation Starship rocket is designed with a reusable upper stage that should reduce this kind of leftover hardware.
Is NASA also tracking the impact site
Yes. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has circled the moon since 2009, is searching for the same crash site using its own cameras. Finding it depends on lighting conditions, orbital timing and the spacecraft’s position, and the agency has said it could take several days before any usable images come back. NASA has said any data collected will help scientists better understand how artificial impacts affect the lunar surface.

Yes, though rarely. A Chinese rocket upper stage struck the moon in 2022, and NASA has intentionally crashed spacecraft into the lunar surface for research, including a 2009 mission that searched for water ice near the south pole.
Unintentional impacts add to a growing amount of human made material already on the moon, which by some estimates now totals more than 200 tons of spent rockets, landers and other debris left behind since the Soviet Union’s Luna 2 mission in 1959. Scientists say that as lunar missions accelerate over the next decade, better tracking and clearer disposal rules will matter more, both to protect future robotic missions and to preserve historic sites like the Apollo landing zones.
