The Internal Revenue Service has expanded its Business Tax Account platform with new digital features that give eligible businesses and organizations more tools to manage their federal tax obligations online without contacting the agency directly, the IRS announced on Aug. 6.
The additions are part of a continuing effort to move more IRS interactions to self-service digital channels, reducing the need for phone calls, paper correspondence and in-person visits that have long characterized how businesses communicate with federal tax authorities.
Business Tax Accounts are available to a range of entity types, including sole proprietors, individual partners, S corporations, C corporations, tax-exempt organizations, Indian tribal governments, and federal, state and local government entities. Each eligible organization can designate officials who have access to manage the account.
New notice access
The most significant new capability is expanded access to digital versions of IRS notices through the Business Tax Account portal. Notices that previously arrived by mail can now be viewed, downloaded and acted on within the account, streamlining how businesses receive official communications from the agency.
Four specific notices have been added or newly accessible through the platform. The first, designated CP081B, is issued when the IRS identifies a missing tax return for a specific year in which the taxpayer has an outstanding refund or credit. The notice alerts the business to the discrepancy and prompts the filing needed to release the funds.
A second notice, designated CP134R, is issued when a discrepancy in federal tax deposits results in a refund owed to the taxpayer. Accessing this notice digitally allows businesses to see and respond to the communication without waiting for paper mail, which can delay action on refunds.
The third addition is CP211A, which confirms that an application for an extension of time to file has been approved. The notice is issued when a taxpayer’s Form 8868 has been accepted, giving the organization documented confirmation of its extended deadline.
Finally, designated officials can now download the CP575 notice, which serves as official confirmation of a new Employer Identification Number. The EIN is a nine-digit number assigned by the IRS to identify a business entity for tax purposes, and the CP575 is often required by banks and financial institutions when opening accounts or establishing credit.
Why digital notice access matters
For businesses that manage multiple tax obligations across different periods and entity types, receiving notices by mail creates delays and increases the risk that important communications are missed, misrouted or acted on too slowly. A notice about a missing tax return, for example, carries implications that compound over time if the underlying filing is not submitted.
Having those notices available in a centralized digital account, visible to authorized officials of the organization, reduces the gap between when the IRS sends a notice and when the relevant decision-maker becomes aware of it. It also creates a more reliable record of what communications have been received and when.
The IRS has been investing in its digital infrastructure for several years, with the Business Tax Account expansion representing one component of a broader initiative to modernize how the agency interacts with taxpayers. The agency has noted that digital self-service options are both more convenient for users and more efficient for the IRS, freeing staff resources from routine correspondence that automated systems can handle.
Who benefits most
Small business owners and tax professionals who manage accounts for multiple clients stand to gain the most from expanded digital notice access. The ability to check account status, view outstanding notices and download official documentation without waiting for mail or navigating phone queues reduces the administrative burden that tax compliance places on small organizations with limited staff.
Larger entities with dedicated tax departments will find the EIN notice download and digital access to refund-related notices useful for maintaining accurate records and accelerating the resolution of discrepancies.
The IRS said additional features and enhancements to Business Tax Accounts are planned for the coming months as the modernization effort continues.
