Rapper and record producer Future, whose legal name is Nayvadius Wilburn, is facing a fresh legal challenge after the mother of one of his children filed a contempt petition asking a court to consider jail time as a consequence for his alleged noncompliance with an existing court order.
Brittni Mealy, who shares a 12-year-old son named Prince with the rapper, claims that Future failed to fulfill the terms of a 2023 court order requiring him to obtain a $500,000 life insurance policy with Mealy named as trustee for their son. Court filings indicate she is seeking to have him held in contempt and incarcerated until the policy is in place. Future has not publicly responded to the petition.
A pattern of legal disputes stretching back years
This is not the first time Mealy has sought court intervention regarding their son’s financial provisions. In 2023, a judge ordered Future to increase his monthly child support payments for Prince from $3,000 to $5,000, citing a substantial change in the rapper’s income and financial standing since the original order was set in 2014. At the time of the revised ruling, Future’s monthly earnings were assessed at significantly more than double what Mealy earned, making the increase a reflection of the disparity in their respective financial situations rather than any new dispute.
Prior to that ruling, Mealy had also raised concerns about Future’s presence in Prince’s life, alleging that he had not consistently exercised his scheduled parenting time and that she had covered child care costs during his absences. Those claims contributed to the broader argument that an adjustment to the financial arrangement was warranted.
A long history of family court proceedings
Future’s family court record extends well beyond his history with Mealy. He is the father of multiple children with several women, and legal disputes involving child support and paternity have followed him for years across a number of those relationships.
Jessica Smith, the mother of his oldest child Jakobi, born in 2002, sought increased child support in 2016 and also raised concerns about parental involvement. Eliza Seraphin, the mother of Reign Wilburn, born in 2019, filed a paternity and child support lawsuit that was resolved in May 2020 when a court-ordered DNA test confirmed Future’s paternity and established a monthly support payment following a dispute over the amount. A separate case involving a child named Legend Wilburn was filed and subsequently dropped, though Future has not publicly acknowledged that child as his own.
Outside the courtroom
Beyond the legal proceedings, Future has maintained a public profile both musically and romantically. He made a red carpet appearance alongside German recording artist Donna Dafi in September 2024, attending a prominent fashion industry event together in Paris. Previous relationships that received public attention include one with Lori Harvey, daughter of television personality Steve Harvey, as well as Dess Dior. He also shares a daughter, Londyn, with India Jones.
Future has spoken in interviews about his perspective on his family situation, expressing that he views the mothers of his children and the children themselves as extended family regardless of how romantic relationships concluded. He has also acknowledged the complexity of navigating those relationships, noting that introducing a romantic partnership with one of the mothers could disrupt the equilibrium he described as being in place.
